1. Determining Daily Organic Waste Input

  • The waste input is determined by the selected Kwik Composter model's daily processing capacity (measured in kg/day) or a custom user input.

  • Example: For model KCST100, the daily waste input is 100 kg/day.

2. Calculating Annual Waste Diverted

To find the total weight of organic waste diverted from landfills per year, the daily capacity is multiplied by the operational days per year (defaulted to 300 days) and converted from kilograms into metric tons:

Annual Waste Diverted (Metric Tons) = Daily Capacity (kg) X Operational Days/ 1,000

  • Example: 100 (kg) X 300(days)/ 1,000 = 30 Metric Tons/year

3. Applying the Emission Factor (GHG Avoidance)

When organic waste goes to a landfill, it degrades anaerobically, producing methane, a potent greenhouse gas with a high global warming potential. In-vessel aerobic composting accelerates decomposition using oxygen, significantly suppressing methane generation.

A standard IPCC/industry baseline emission factor of 0.6 tCO2e per metric ton of municipal solid waste (MSW) diverted is applied:

GHG Emissions Avoided/Contained (tCO2e/yr) = Annual Waste Diverted (Tons) X 0.6

  • Example: 30Tons X 0.6 = 18.00 tCO2e/year

4. Carbon Credits Generation

In carbon offset markets, 1 carbon credit typically represents 1 metric ton of carbon dioxide equivalent (tCO2e) avoided or reduced. Therefore, the total carbon credits generated equal the net GHG emissions avoided:

Carbon Credits Generated = GHG Emissions Avoided (tCO2e/yr)

Carbon Credit & GHG Emission Calculation Methodology

The calculator estimates the environmental impact by comparing the emissions of aerobic in-vessel composting (using Kwik Composter models ranging from KCST30 to KCST25000) against the baseline scenario of disposing municipal solid waste (MSW) in unmanaged or standard landfills where organic matter decays anaerobically.
